Kaffeemusik: Ockeghem - Medieval Polyphony

In 15th-century Belgium, Johannes Ockeghem began as a chorister, moving to Paris to compose at the French court. Among his a cappella masterpieces are his mass Missa Cuiusvis Toni and the 36-voice motet Deo Gratias - which, like Tallis's 40-voice Spem in Alium, we'll perform in the early music equivalent of Dolby surround sound.

A Boy was Born in Bethlehem

Our Christmas concert juxtaposes an array of ancient carols and motets with modern songs and anthems. Such composers as Clemens non papa,

Lassus, Praetorius and Guerrero represent Renaissance music, while the contemporary arrangers and composers include Jan Sandström, Benjamin Britten and Canada's Mark Sirett. Come, listen and also sing along with favourite carols!

A reception with delicious Christmas fare follows the concert.

Opening Notes • 7 p.m.

Gibbons: Canticles & Cries

Echoing cathedral music combines with raucous street cries in a fascinating variety of sounds. The Cries of London and Magnificat by Orlando Gibbons, Glenn Gould's favourite composer, illustrate our secular/sacred theme. With organ, lute and the viols of the Cardinal Consort, we will perform Renaissance canticles, anthems, madrigals and vendors' cries by Gibbons, Byrd and others.

Opening Notes • 7 p.m.

Charity Kaffeemusik: Bach Cantata, "Break your bread for the hungry"

To close, we return to the master who is a TCC mainstay: J.S. Bach.
His sacred cantata #39, Brich dem Hungrigen dein Brot, features soprano, alto and bass soloists and the choir accompanies by winds, strings and organ. In the spirit of the cantat's reflections on the transofrmative power of charity, we encourage you to contribute to our food drive for the needy who live in our richly blessed city.

Afternoon Kaffeemusiks

A mix of expert and entertaining commentary from our Music Director with music sung by the choir. Coffee, tea and home baking follow.

Evening Concerts

Full-length performances with guest soloists and instrumentalists featuring rare choral masterpieces from the Renaissance and Baroque periods – sacred or secular, always special.

Opening Notes

Pre-concert talks with musical demonstrations give insight into the music in our evening concerts.

Programmes and artists are subject to change without notice.
